Born in January or early February? The 1996 boundary
The Kua formula runs on your Lichun-rule birth year, not the calendar year. Born in 1996 on or after 1996-02-04 (the exact Lichun instant is 1996-02-04 21:07:59, Beijing time)? Use 1996: male 4, female 2. Born before that instant? Your Lichun year is 1995: male 5 (Kun), female 1 (Kan) — see Kua number 1995. Most online calculators silently use the calendar year and get every early-February birthday wrong.
Eight directions for 1996 births
Traditional Eight Mansions assigns a star to each of the eight directions for every Kua — four favourable, four unfavourable. Computed by the kernel's two independent classical paths (agreement 8/8):

FAQ
What is my Kua number if I was born in 1996?
For births after the exact Lichun instant (1996-02-04 21:07:59, Beijing): male 4 (Xun, East Four group), female 2 (Kun, West Four group). Births before that instant belong to 1995 — male 5, female 1.
I was born in January or early February 1996 — which year do I use?
Use your Lichun-rule year. The year flips at the exact Lichun instant around February 4 — in 1996 it is 1996-02-04 21:07:59 Beijing. Before it, you are a 1995 birth for Kua purposes; after it, 1996. The Kua calculator applies your exact birthday and shows the instant it used.
What are the favourable directions for Kua 4?
In the Eight Mansions 八宅 tradition, each Kua has four favourable and four unfavourable directions — see the tables below. Male births after Lichun 1996 carry Kua 4; the male table applies. (Female births in 1996: use the female table.) These are the traditional star assignments, computed by two independent classical methods (the Dayou-nian verse and the six-line transformation) and cross-checked — they agreed 8/8 palaces.
East Four or West Four — what does it mean?
Traditional Eight Mansions groups the eight trigrams into East Four (坎离震巽) and West Four (乾坤艮兑). Classical practice treats same-group combinations as more compatible — between a person and a dwelling's sitting trigram, or between two people. It is a classification from the classical literature, not a prediction; we compute and display it without endorsing outcomes.
